This past few weeks, we were assigned to read a book called Holes. The author of this book is called Louis Sachar,
So, on today's post, I am going to summarize chapter 1 until chapter 30.
This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He was accused of stealing a sneaker that belonged to a famous runner, Clyde Livingston. He was given a choice whether he want to stay in jail or if he wants to go to camp green lake.
Being a boy that came from a poor family, Stanley never been to an actual camp. So, he chooses Camp Green Lake. When he arrives there, he was shocked. that there is no lake or greens at all,. There is a lake actually, but it dried 110 years ago.
There, he have to dig a hole about 5 feet big and if he finds something interesting, he has to give it to the warden. If the Warden says that it is interesting, she will let you have the rest of the day off.
Stanley made new friends in tent D, the tent he was assigned to. He didn't want to dig a hole. He believes that it is because of his dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather was cursed and it went down in his family.
The curse starts when Elya Yelnats, Stanley's great great grandfather, fell in love with a girl. Unfortunately for him, there is also another guy that fell in love with her. The girl can't choose. Instead, she wanted them to bring the biggest pig they can ever found.
Elya went to Madame Zeroni and ask her to give him the biggest pig she can ever find. She gave him a small pig instead. Elya is confused. Then Madame Zeroni explained to him that he has to bring the pig to the top of the mountain and let the pig drink from the water and sing it a lullaby. On the day he was presenting it to the girl, he should bring the pig one more time. After the girl marries him, he has to bring Madame Zeroni up the mountain and sing her a lullaby,
But, Elya didn't bring Madame Zeroni up the mountain. The girl ended up marrying the other guy that competed with Elya. Thats when Stanley believes the curse starts.
Stanley was digging up a hole, and he finds a gold tube with the initial KB on it, KB actually stands for Katherine Barlow. She is a teacher that used to teach in the location Camp Green Lake is in right now.
Katherine was a lovely woman. She fell in love with a black person, called Sam. He was an onion seller. But, back then, it is illegal for a black man to kiss a white woman.
Zero is Stanley's best friend at camp. His real name is Hector Zeroni, which make him the great great grandson of Madame Zeroni, the one that gave the curse to Stanley's family.
